About the Artist:
John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was an American painter acclaimed for his technical mastery and cosmopolitan career. While best known as one of the foremost portraitists of his time, he also created an extensive body of watercolors and architectural studies during his travels. These works, often painted on site, reveal Sargent’s fascination with light, design, and the grandeur of Europe’s artistic heritage.

About the Artwork:
Painted between 1898 and 1900, Tiepolo Ceiling, Milan reflects Sargent’s admiration for the great Venetian Baroque painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. The watercolor study captures one of Tiepolo’s elaborate ceiling frescoes in Milan, emphasizing its dynamic movement, rich ornamentation, and luminous color. Rather than reproducing the fresco in precise detail, Sargent distilled its energy and grandeur into loose yet expressive brushstrokes, preserving the spirit of Tiepolo’s art while filtering it through his own modern sensibility.

Why We Selected It:
We chose this work because it embodies the dialogue between past and present—Sargent’s modern watercolor technique reinterprets Tiepolo’s Baroque opulence for a new era. It brings elegance, drama, and cultural depth into any setting, making it a statement piece for those who value history, artistry, and the enduring power of European decorative traditions.
