About the Tradition
A Mola is a vibrant textile art form created by the Guna (also spelled Kuna) people, an Indigenous community from Panama and Colombia. Traditionally, molas are hand-sewn panels made using the reverse appliqué technique, where layers of brightly colored cloth are cut, stitched, and arranged to form intricate designs. Originally used as part of women’s blouses, molas have become celebrated as standalone works of art, representing cultural identity, craftsmanship, and storytelling.
About This Artwork
This 20th-century mola showcases the striking geometric and organic motifs characteristic of Guna textile art. With bold colors and layered patterns, it captures both aesthetic beauty and cultural symbolism — from natural themes like animals and plants to abstract designs inspired by the Guna worldview. Each mola is unique, a reflection of both tradition and the personal artistry of its maker.
Why We Selected It
The mola embodies resilience, creativity, and the preservation of Indigenous heritage in a modern context. Displaying it in your space is more than decoration — it’s a recognition of cultural continuity, human ingenuity, and the timeless power of handmade art.
