About the Artist:
Owen Jones (1809–1874) was a British architect, designer, and theorist, recognized as one of the most influential figures in 19th-century design. Best known for his landmark publication The Grammar of Ornament (1856), Jones sought to systematize and celebrate decorative traditions from around the world. Drawing on Islamic, Egyptian, Greek, and medieval sources, he argued for universal design principles that would inspire modern architecture and applied arts. His work bridged scholarship and practice, laying the foundation for design reform in Victorian Britain.

About the Artwork:
Ornament refers to the richly illustrated plates Jones created for The Grammar of Ornament. These designs present stylized motifs from diverse cultures, each rendered with bold geometry, vivid color, and meticulous symmetry. Far from being mere decoration, Jones’ studies embodied his philosophy that ornament should be rooted in nature, abstraction, and historical tradition. The series became a visual encyclopedia of global design, influencing architects, textile makers, and decorative artists for generations.

Why We Selected It:
We chose Ornament because it embodies the timeless principles of beauty, order, and cross-cultural inspiration. Its patterns bring sophistication and historical depth to modern interiors, whether displayed as a single plate or in a curated series. The work reflects both scholarly rigor and aesthetic brilliance, making it ideal for collectors and spaces that value the intersection of history, design, and artistry.
